Here's how we see ourselves and our home afloat.

About Us

coloradoportrait-1.jpg

We hail from Skidaway Island, Georgia, when we are not living aboard. Dick is an engineer who retired early from worldwide manufacturing for Procter & Gamble and had a second career as a museum director before retiring for real.  Gayl also had a couple careers, marketing for Procter & Gamble, then promoting museums, before Dick convinced her to retire really early and explore the world with him.

We have been married since 2000.  One of our great joys in cruising at a trawlerly pace is enjoying the natural world along the way.  We are ardent birders, hikers, cyclists, and kayakers.  Indoors, we are art quilters, though the confines of the boat limit the scope of our work somewhat.

About Starsong

dscn0724.jpg

Starsong is a vintage Grand Banks Motor Yacht, made in Singapore in 1986.  It is 42 feet long, 14 feet wide, and has a 4.5 foot draft.  Powered by two 135 horsepower diesel engines, she cruises efficiently at a leisurely 8 mph, burning about 3 gallons of fuel per hour.  She maxes out at about 12 mph.

Starsong is a somewhat rare style for Grand Banks, with a galley-down configuration and a sundeck.  She has a spacious aft stateroom with an island queen bed and separate head and shower compartments.  The forward cabin has a V-berth and adjacent spacious head with shower.

The salon is our all-purpose room, and includes a lower helm station we only use in really bad weather.  We pull up part of the floor in the salon everyday, so Dick can mess around in the engine room below.

Essential equipment:
We have bikes and kayaks on board for exercise and exploring, binoculars and spotting scope for birding, and a sewing machine and "tiny" fabric stash, since we can't give up quilting for a year.  We also have an espresso machine, since we can't live without our lattes. Satellite radio ensures we always get the news from NPR, no matter where we may be.
